Study Resources

Cardiff Law Library

Our main law library has over 100,000 volumes with subscriptions to more than 200 current periodicals and law reports. It is conveniently located in the University's Humanities Library, opposite the Law Building at the junction of Cathays Terrace, Park Place and Colum Road (map reference 18).

The collections include teaching materials for undergraduate and masters courses in law. Research collections reflect the interests of the School: criminal law and justice, intellectual property, environmental law, marine and shipping law, family law and justice, medico-legal studies, canon law and civil legal process. In addition, electronic databases and retrieval systems such as westlaw, Lexis-Nexis and Hein On-Line facilitate access to many other major reports and journals.

Law Library staff are on hand to offer specialist research assistance, including one-to-one and workshop training in information searching and mediated literature researches. During the first week of the academic year, there are continuous tours of the Law Library from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m, which last approximately 15 minutes; it is a requirement that all new students attend a tour.

Legal Practice Library

These information resources are complemented by the practitioner collection in the Legal Practice Library. This is a dedicated legal resource unit constructed in 1996, housing a practitioner library and extensive computing facilities with adjacent teaching rooms, equipped with wallmounted audio visual equipment.

The Law Library is situated on the first floor of the Arts and Social Studies Library which is located on the Colum Drive site at the junction of Cathays Terrace, Park Place and Colum Road (map reference 18).

During the first week of the academic year, there are continuous tours of the Law Library from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m, which last approximately 15 minutes; it is a requirement that all new students attend a tour.

At times, you will find that there is very heavy demand for items in short supply.  We try to anticipate this demand by ensuring that multiple copies of popular items are kept in the short loan collection; however, if you are having difficulty obtaining a copy owing to high demand, please inform the library staff who will try to resolve the issue.
