Student Support Personal Tutor Scheme
An important feature of the Law School is the personal tutor system. Full details of the personal tutor system can be found in the Undergraduate Student Handbook, which you will be issued with at enrolment.
All students are assigned to a member of the academic staff who is responsible for their pastoral care. The role of the personal tutor is varied and includes providing tutees with guidance, advice about their choice of optional modules or examinations, writing job references and generally keeping a watchful eye over their tutees’ progress.
It is your personal tutor that you should contact first if you need help or advice. Tutors are expected to maintain regular contact with their tutees, but do not be afraid to see your tutor if something is troubling you. You will be notified at enrolment of your personal tutor’s name and contact details, and you will be invited to attend an informal meeting with your personal tutor in the first two weeks of the semester.
You will be invited to an informal social gathering during the first few weeks of the academic year, which you will give you the opportunity to meet and chat with your personal tutor and other students and academic staff.
The Law School has a Senior Personal Tutor, whose main function is to keep an overview of the personal tutor system, ensure that it runs as it should and make suggestions to improve it. You can speak to him if you have any concerns about the operation of the scheme. He also provides cover for tutors who are ill or absent, so that students can always receive prompt attention.
