Mooting
As a Cardiff Law student, you can get involved in ‘mooting’, gaining the closest possible experience to life in the court room. We run internal mooting competitions and students are also encouraged to enter external
competitions between universities across the UK.
Mooting is where two teams of ‘advocates’ argue a fictitious legal problem in front of a judge (or panel of judges). One team take the role of counsel for the Appellants; the other team are counsel for the Respondents. There are two members of each team: one is leading counsel; the other is junior counsel. At Cardiff, mooting is run jointly by the Student Law Society and the Law School.
Experience of mooting is well respected by the legal profession and other employees as it enables students to develop their research, written and oral communication skills. In 2011, a team from Cardiff won the Welsh National Mooting Competition (pictured right). To find out more please contact Dr Russell Sandberg.
What is mooting and how can it help you as a student and in your career? Dr Russell Sandberg explains.
