Asylum Justice Scheme
The Law School recently piloted a scheme in partnership with the charity Asylum Justice (AJ). AJ volunteers give advice to asylum seekers in South Wales, via weekly surgeries at Cardiff, Newport and Swansea.
The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants has recently delivering training at the law school to help students achieve a national qualification awarded by the OISC (Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner). This Level 1 (Initial Advice) training covered British immigration control, working in the UK, awareness of Asylum and Human Rights Issues, and citizenship.
The Law School is in ongoing discussions with Asylum Justice to develop and extend the training to Level 2, so that students may give advice at an AJ drop-in centre. It is hoped that “charitable internships” will follow for students wanting to volunteer with this charity.
