Law Staff elected to represent South Wales on the Law Society Council
Oct 2006
David Dixon of the Centre for Professional Legal Studies has been elected to represent South Wales on the Law Society Council. He changes roles with Cardiff alumnus, Simon Mumford, who was the local council member for 9 years until July. Simon has now succeeded David as Chairman of the Confederation of South Wales Law Societies.
Up until now, the Law Society has been the regulator and complaints-handler for solicitors, as well as their representational organisation. However, in the wake of the Clementi report on legal services, which recommended the separation of these functions and in anticipation of the Legal Services Bill, it is in the process of renewing and re-energising itself as an advocate for the profession and its independence from the government and other vested interests and a more effective protector of the profession's interests, while retaining its important contribution to law reform. The Law Society’s governing council has an important role in this process.
