Cardiff Team Wins National Award
Mar 2012
Students from Cardiff Law School have demonstrated that their legal skills are the best in the country. Final year students Rhiannon Hughes and Marina Kaur-Channing, both won the National Client Interviewing Competition.
The competition saw 24 universities from England and Wales competing from the outset. They had to learn to conduct client interviews in the area of Employment Law and also get to grips with this new area of law, from scratch.
The theme of the competition was Employers and Employees, and the students had to answer questions relating to this area. Julie Price, said “It's a particularly significant achievement for our students because they were also competing against students on the professional legal training courses such as LPC, BPTC and GDL in the area of Employment Law.”

The students were assisted in their preparations for the competition by staff at the Law School’s Centre for Professional Legal Studies.
Marina Kaur Channing said, "I entered the Client Interviewing Competition because I wanted the opportunity to develop my interviewing technique. The competition itself was fantastic - we really enjoyed having the opportunity to meet Law students from other Universities. I have gained so many skills from participating, and would strongly recommend the competition to anyone who is considering entering next year!"
The students will now represent England and Wales in Dublin in April, where the international competition is being hosted by the Law Society of Ireland. They will compete against about 20 countries, including Commonwealth countries, Finland, Holland and Kazakhstan.
The Cup was presented to the Cardiff team by the Chair of the Client Interviewing Competition for England and Wales, Graham Robson. The Law School received £1,000 from the Law Society of England and Wales towards travel for the international competition. The students also received £250 each from the Law Society of England and Wales as personal prize money.
