LPC Course Information
At Cardiff, which ever mode of study you choose, we aim:
- to prepare you for a training contract by equipping you to deal with the demands that are likely to be made of you in practice; and
- to lay the foundation for your future practice as solicitors by encouraging habits of competence, confidence and professionalism.
Please note that, although you are able to apply for, and be offered a place on, both the full time and part time LPC, you are only able to accept a place on one of these courses.
Full Time LPC
To apply for our full time LPC your application must be made through the Central Applications Board.
The Legal Practice Course (full and part time) includes two stages - stage 1 and stage 2: Stage 1:
Stage 2: 3 vocational elective areas (i.e. 3 subject areas of your choice). |
Each core practice area and vocational elective is assessed, as is Professional Conduct and Regulation (including Solicitors' Accounts). Each skill is also assessed. Assessments take different forms, including examinations and oral skills exercises.
Each course begins with a Foundation Course designed to set the stage for the rest of Stage 1. In the Foundation Course students are introduced to the course skills, to the core practice areas and to the other elements of the LPC, such as Professional Conduct and Regulation.
In addition to the standard elements of the LPC, at Cardiff we also offer a short, optional course on Advocacy in Welsh (Eiriolaeth yn y Gymraeg).
The Course commences in early September each year and finishes in late June the following year. Stage 1 begins in September and finishes in March. Stage 2 begins in March and finishes in June.
Part Time LPC
We began offering the LPC part time in September 2010, presenting an ideal opportunity for students to enhance their legal education in a flexible learning environment. The course is delivered on Fridays, combining a mixture of face to face small group teaching and online lecture delivery.
The content and structure of our part time course is the same as the full time course, except that the part time course is delivered over 2 years, with a mixture of core practice areas, course skills and vocational electives in both years.
If you are interested in our part time LPC, please read our information for the 2012-14 course. If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to contact us.
- We are currently accepting applications for 2012-14 and will do so until our course is full. Applications can be made online, or please contact us if you would like a hard copy.
- Please read our Guidance Notes before applying online.
