Introduction

Sophie has studied at Cardiff University in the School of Social Sciences since 2004, gaining a BScEcon Social Policy and Criminology (2:1), Masters in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Masters in Social Science Research Methods (ESRC recognised).

Her second masters sparked her interest of citizen engagement in community policing, and her dissertation acted as a pilot study for her doctoral studies. Using a qualitative research strategy, design and methods of interviews and focus groups, supported by field notes and official documents, the research investigated the extent to which the community initiative PACT in Cardiff, engaged and empowered citizens, and how it operated within the remit of the neighbourhood policing programme.

She is currently undertaking full time doctoral studies at Cardiff Law School, under the supervision of Stewart Fields (Cardiff Law School) and Adam Edwards (School of Social Sciences), researching the impact on citizen engagement as a consequence of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011, and the devolved context of Wales.
