Introduction

Dr Stewart Field became a lecturer at Cardiff in 1984 after undertaking Doctoral research funded by the ESRC at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Oxford. He had previously obtained an M Phil in Criminology at Cambridge after a first degree in Law at Oxford University. His PhD `Legal Forms, Legal Ideology and the Early Factory Inspectorate' used an historical case-study to examine the interaction between social conflict and legal forms. Dr Field's current research interests are in the criminal process, often using a comparative perspective. He has co-authored two monographs and co-edited thee collections of essays as well as publishing articles on a variety of criminal process topics including detailed bilateral comparative studies focussing on the Netherlands, France and Italy. Dr Field has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Law and Society since 1989 and Deputy Director of the Cardiff Centre for Crime Law and Justice since 2010. He is currently writing a book with Professor David Nelken from the University of Macerata 'Making sense of youth justice: a comparative study of Italy and Wales'. It is based on an empirical study part-funded by the Italian Ministry of Education and the ESRC. The AHRC has financed a six-month fellowship to write up the project. Dr Field has also recently published a book 'The transformation of criminal justice: a comparison of France and England and Wales' (L'Harmattan, Paris 2011) written with Dr Renaud Colson from the University of Nantes which examines the developing discourses around procedural fairness, repressive efficacy and managerial efficiency in the two jurisdictions. The study has been part-funded by the British Academy and La Mission de recherche Droit et Justice (a joint initiative of French Ministry of Justice and CNRS).
