Introduction

Educated at Oxford University, James Young has spent his university teaching life in Cardiff. He has been a visiting lecturer at a number of continental European universities and for four years has been director of an undergraduate course on English law in the Faculty of Law, Charles University, Prague. Together with Jiri Priban, he is actively involved in developing links with Central European universities. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Law and Society.\r\n\r\nHis teaching and research interests lie in private international law and public law. His particular interests are in private international family law, the European Convention of Human Rights and the constitutional protection of human rights in Central Europe. Most recent publications include a collection of essays edited with Luke Clements, Human Rights: Changing the Culture Blackwell (1999) and a collection of essays edited with Jirí Pribán, The Rule of Law in Central Europe: The Reconstruction of Legality, Constitutionalism and Civil Society in the Post-Communist Countries, Dartmouth (1999).
