Introduction
Steven Vaughan is the City Solicitors Educational Trust Lecturer in Obligations at Cardiff Law School. After his undergraduate degree at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University, he trained as a solicitor with the London and Paris offices of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, before working as an associate in the firm’s Environmental, Land and Resources team. Immediately prior to his move to Cardiff in 2007, he was an attorney with the London office of the US law firm Latham & Watkins, advising clients on cross border mergers and acquisitions and project finance transactions. During his time in practice, his deals have included advising the Qatari Investment Authority on the purchase of Harrods department store and the £1.8bn sale of the Moto group of motorway service stations.
Steven’s research interests lie in the intersection of business and environmental matters. He is currently working on a PhD under the supervision of Professor Robert Lee, on an ESRC 1+3 scholarship linked with the Centre for Business Responsibility, Accountability, Sustainability and Society (www.brass.cf.ac.uk). The PhD thesis has, at its heart, a review of the regulatory models which underpin EU chemicals regulation (a law commonly known as REACH).
Academic outputs to date have included journal articles in peer reviewed journals, conference papers and articles in the trade press. Steven has also been interviewed for (and quoted in) The Times, The Financial Times, ENDS Europe Report, Transport Finance and Acquisitions Monthly on a range of topics including the inclusion of the aviation sector in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, REACH and how to factor changing EU environmental laws into complex business transactions.
At the Law School, Steven teaches Company Law and Tort Law and also gives lectures on the undergraduate Environmental Law course. He has previously taught at Bristol University (Company Law) and City University, London (Corporate Finance; Project Finance; and Banking Law) in addition to lecturing on Environmental Law at the Schools of Engineering, Earth Sciences and City & Regional Planning at Cardiff.
