Introduction
Sir Stephen Sedley is a Lord Justice of Appeal for England and Wales and President of the British Institute of Human Rights. Born on 9 October 1939, Sir Stephen studied at the University of Cambridge. He was called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 1964. He was involved in many high-profile cases and inquiries, from the death of Blair Peach and the Carl Bridgewater murder case to the contempt hearing against Kenneth Baker, then Home Secretary.
In 1983 he became a QC and in 1992 he was appointed a High Court judge, serving in the Queen's Bench Division. In 1999 he was appointed to the Court of Appeal. He writes on legal topics for The London Review of Books.
Sir Stephen will give the Law School's Annual Lecture on 4th November 2010.
