Introduction
Professor Robert Lee was Head of the Law School from 1995-1998, and is currently a Co-Director of the ESRC Research Centre on Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society (BRASS) (www.brass.cardiff.ac.uk). He is an environmental lawyer and an acknowledged expert on contaminated land and on waste management. He is editor of Environmental Law Monthly, the Environmental Editor for the Journal of Business Law. and Current Developments Editor for the Journal of Environmental Law. He is a trustee of the Environmental Law Foundation.
His wider interest is in regulatory issues is evidenced by his book with Derek Morgan entitled Human Fertilisation & Embryology - Regulating the Reproductive Revolution (Blackstone Press, 2001). He has considerable publications on the regulation of health care and issues of health and environment. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Bob has a book on food regulation in Europe in press (Routledge) and has edited a two volume reader on Environmental Law and Economics (Ashgate 2008), the environment volume of the Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents (2008), and a collection of essays on Economic Globalisation and ecological Localisation (Blackwell, 2009)
Bob has spent time in commercial practice with Denton Wilde Sapte and Hammonds and is now a professional development consultant with the Environment, Planning and Regulation Group of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; he continues to have an active interest in legal practice. This has led to the publication of a research study on large law firms (Firm Views: The Work of and Work in Large Law Firms, Law Society, 1999), rural firms (Legal Services in Rural Wales, Law Society, 2006) and articles on the work of Brussels Law Firms (Recht der Werkelijkheid, 2004) and globalisation of legal ethics (Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies). Bob has been a member of the Law Society's Training Committee, the QAA Benchmarking Panel for Law, the Lord Chancellor's Standing Conference on Legal Education and remains a member of the Society of Legal Scholars' Legal Education Sub-committee.
Professor Lee is a consultant to the Environmental Policy Division of the Department of the Environment, Northern Ireland and has worked on eight measures now on the statute book in Northern Ireland as well as certain EU infringement actions against the UK. As a Director of BRASS he has helped generate over £10M in research income since January 2002. Recent BRASS projects with which he has been involved include two projects on the regulation of nanomaterials for the OSI and Defra, work on environmental standard setting for the Society of Environmental Toxicologists and Chemists, research on UK Food Security with Chatham House. He sits on both the Nanotechnology Strategy Advisory Team (RCUK) and the Nanotechnology Research Coordination Group (convened by Defra).
