Introduction

Tom studied at the University of Bristol as an undergraduate and subsequently as a postgraduate. Tom joined the Cardiff University in 2008 as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and currently teaches criminal law to undergraduates in the Law School and the law of consent to genetic counselling Masters students. His research focuses on the law of consent to medical treatment and the role of sociological and psychosocial factors in the consent process.

Tom has attended the Postgraduate Socio Legal Studies Association Conference (Birkbeck College, 2009), the Think About Health Conference (Birmingham University, 2009) and the Communication Medicine & Ethics conference (COMET) (Cardiff University, 2009). Tom also gave a paper at the Gregynog conference in February 2009 entitled ‘Undue Influence in Medical Law: How Much is Too Much?’. He is actively involved in the Philosophy of Social Science Research Group, based in the University of Bristol, which has organised trans-disciplinary events on both "Eurocentrism" (University of Bristol, 2008) and "The Philosophical Work of Alain Badiou and its Political
Ramifications" (University of Bristol, 2009).

In addition, Tom is involved with the Centre for Health and Social Care based in the Law School and the Cardiff Centre for Ethics Law and Society.
