| In April this year,
Cardiff Law School played host to the International Client Counselling
Competition 2006 Final. Visitors from eighteen countries attended
the event, from as far as Ukraine, Finland, the Cayman Islands and
for the first time, Nigeria. It was the first time the competition
had been hosted in Wales and was a huge success.
During their visit, competitors were treated to a taste of Wales,
including a trip to St Fagans and the Big Pit. They also had a chance
to hear the famous Blaenavon Male Voice Choir and speak some Welsh
during an entertaining lesson at Eversheds’ Solicitors.
Following two days of competition, New Zealand’s Jonathan
Orpin and Charlotte Saunders were the ultimate winners. They were
coached by Dan Jones, winner of the Glasgow 2004 Final alongside
Craig Ulyatt. Nigeria’s Daniel H Bwala and Aminu Hassan were
the runners by. They were accompanied by their coach Dr Isa Chiroma,
Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Maiduguri. Coached
by Raymond Pearce from the University of Hong Kong, Maureen Hi and
Betty Fu came third.
The four-day event culminated in an awards banquet at Cardiff Castle,
where last year’s winners, Cardiff Law students Matthew Parry
and Lara Robson, formally presented the New Zealand team with the
Louis M Brown shield. Following two days of stiff competition, New

Julie Price, solicitor and professional skills tutor at Cardiff
Law School, organised the event. “We are so proud to have
hosted this prestigious competition in Cardiff. We could not have
done it without the generous support of the local legal profession,
in particular Eversheds, Geldards and Hugh James. The event was
a huge success. President of the competition, Forrest Mosten, from
the U.S.A., thanked Julie Price for her "competence, hardwork,
and wit that produced a wonderful and memorable event."
Cardiff students Laura Barsby and Jemma Robinson came 4th in the
southern regional heats at Swansea. They went on to attend the National
Finals for England and Wales in Westminster on 4th March but Oxford
Institute of Legal Practice was the successful winner and went on
to compete in the Cardiff Final.
The Competition started in the UK in 1984, following its popularity
in the United States. Centring on a simulated law office interview,
it provides a valuable educational and cultural interchange between
students, law teachers and legal practitioners. Panels of lawyers,
academics and counsellors are recruited locally as judges.
The International Client Counselling Competition wishes to thank
the International Bar Association and the IBA Educational Trust
for its generous support for the Competition.
We would also like to thank the following Solicitors' firms for
their generous sponsorship:
